PRESS RELEASE
The Shelby Township Police Department has seen an alarming increase in the number of senior citizen fraud schemes in recent months. Our Detective Bureau was made aware of a case on 04/04/2022, where an elderly Shelby Township resident received a phone call claiming her granddaughter was involved in an incident, and the granddaughter was in desperate need of money having been charged with a crime. During the course of this Relative in Distress Scam, a male was sent to her home to pick up a large sum of cash. Thanks to a vigilant citizen, we were able to identify the male who picked up the money.
The Detective Bureau made this case a priority, and the investigation revealed that there were potentially future victims. With the assistance of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department and the West Bloomfield Township Police Department, contact was made with these potential victims and they were made aware of the scam, and we were able to return their money. Following this, the investigation revealed another actor was involved, and a subsequent arrest was made.
Officers were able to identify that suspect as Yusey Rosello-Torrado, a 41 year old male who resides in Miami, Florida. Shelby Township Police Officers, with the assistance of COMET (County of Macomb Enforcement Team), arrested Yusey Rosello-Torrado yesterday in Hazel Park, as he was attempting to meet up with the courier that had collected the funds earlier in the day. Search warrants were conducted at an area hotel, and the investigation is ongoing.
Yusey Rosello-Torrado was arraigned today on the following charges:
Count 1) Criminal Enterprises (20 year felony)
Count 2) False Pretenses less than $20,000 (5 year felony)
Bond was set today in the amount of $300,000 cash/surety only.
**Additional charges are also pending for the case in West Bloomfield**
“Our entire Detective Bureau, under the direction of D/Sgt. Terry Hogan, did an extraordinary job of investigating this case, identifying and arresting the suspect, and recovering and returning large sums of money that was stolen from elderly citizens” - Deputy Chief Jason Schmittler
The Shelby Township Police Department would like to thank the vigilant citizen, the Michigan State Police in conjunction with COMET (County of Macomb Enforcement Team), the Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) Task Force, West Bloomfield Police Department, and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department.
