On 8/18/23, at approximately 10:56 pm, the Shelby Twp. Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a serious injury motor vehicle accident that occurred at Van Dyke Avenue and Elizabeth Ann Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a blue Chevy Tahoe with heavy front/passenger side damage facing south in the northbound lanes of Van Dyke. There was also a blue Dodge Challenger with heavy front-end damage facing south in the parking lot of 46778 Van Dyke. An unresponsive 25-year-old female was lying face up in the middle of the northbound lanes of Van Dyke, near the accident scene, with apparent serious injuries. It was discovered that she was the passenger of the Tahoe. Lifesaving efforts were provided by both police and fire personnel, but the 25-year-old succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on scene.
The 26-year-old female driver and 27-year-old female passenger of the Challenger had to be removed from the vehicle by EMS personnel and were transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital due to their injuries. The 43-year-old female driver of the Chevy Tahoe also had to be removed from the vehicle and was also transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital with injuries.
Van Dyke Avenue between 21 Mile and Russell Avenue was shut down for several hours while the Shelby Township Traffic and Evidence-Tech bureaus investigated. Speed and alcohol appear to be a contributing factor in this crash. However, this case is still under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed or has information regarding this crash is asked to contact Detective Jordan Haughee at (586)731-2121, ext. 333.
