Happy Monday everybody! This week we would like you to meet Lieutenant Dowty. Lieutenant Dowty grew up in Troy and graduated from Athens High School. He went on to achieve his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University. Lieutenant Dowty started at Shelby Township Police Department in 2008 as a Patrol Officer. He was an Evidence Technician, a Field Training Officer, a member of the Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and a member of the Honor Guard. He got promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2018 and was the Sergeant of the Traffic Bureau. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2021 as a Shift Commander and is now the Administrative Lieutenant. He is also the Commander of the Field Training Officer program, the TRU team, Community Services Unit, Traffic Bureau, and all of our training as a Police Department. One of Lieutenant Dowty’s biggest accomplishments was developing the Community Services Unit to help establish the connection between the community and the Police Department. He is still a member of the Honor Guard along with being a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD, which is a self-defense class for women) Instructor and trained on the Police mountain bikes. He was also selected by the department to attend Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and graduated with class #451. As you can see, Lieutenant Dowty wears many hats at work and a valued member of the Police Department. Outside of work he has many hobbies including wood working, playing hockey, mountain biking, golfing and traveling the world! But most importantly he is always trying to be a good husband and the best father for his wife and children. Make sure to say hello to Lieutenant Dowty!
