Today, with help from our friends at Utica-VanDyke Towing, our Property Clerk Wendy was able to say good-bye to the giant stack of unused, unclaimed, unloved bikes that have been cluttering her files and the grounds of the tow yard for months (and in some cases years!). Traditionally, unclaimed and unidentified lost or stolen bikes would be included with the annual police auction and be bought in bulk by scrappers. This year we decided that there are far too many people in need for these bikes to be left to the elements. Instead we were able to partner with the Oakland County Sheriff's Re-Cycle for Kids program to hopefully give some of these bikes a new life. The program helps teach jail trustees valuable skills in re-habbing and reconditioning bicycles and then donates the refurbished bikes to needy kids all over Michigan. Thanks to Rocco, Dino and George at Utica-VanDyke for donating the truck (and driver Andy) to transport the bikes, Officer Bacci for helping load them up, and Becky at Holy Spokes and Mandy at OCSD for helping bring it all together!
