PRESS RELEASE
Shelby Township Police Department through its routine monitoring of social media became aware of a possible protest march scheduled for October 24, 2020 at 2PM. At about 1:30 PM a group of about 100 protesters gathered in the parking lot at the southeastern corner of 23 Mile Rd and Van Dyke. Officers met with the organizers and advised them to stay safe on the sidewalk and to not block or enter the roadway. At about 4PM the group left the parking lot and entered eastbound 23 Mile Rd blocking traffic. After numerous warnings to the group to go back on the sidewalk or they risked being arrested they refused. Seven individuals ended up being arrested during this protest for charges included felony assault on a police officer. Also, numerous vehicles were issued citations for impeding traffic. While on scene one of the arrestees escaped her flex cuffs in the rear of a patrol car and stripped her clothes off. It was reported on social media that officers stripped search her and that was completely false. The incident was captured on our car video system. That video will download immediately and should be released shortly.
