Shelby Township Police announces the retirement of Deputy Chief, Mark A. Coil.
After 31 years of service to the township, Mark Coil is retiring. Mark’s last official day will be on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022.
Mark was the first officer in the 68 year history of the department to hold the rank of Deputy Chief, which he earned in 2015. After graduation from college, Mark was hired by the Metro Parks Police Department where he served a short stint and then moved to the East Detroit Police Department where he spent approximately six months before joining the Shelby Township P.D. in January of 1991.
Mark attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1989 with a B.A. degree in criminal justice. Deputy Chief Coil began his career in the patrol division, and also performed the role of D.A.R.E Officer for 5 years. In January 2001, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Deputy Chief Coil was also a use of force instructor for 13 years, a member of the Macomb County SWAT team for four years, and spent ten years on the department's Honor Guard. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, taking on the duties and responsibilities of a shift commander. In February 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and in April, named Deputy Chief.
Mark oversaw the daily operations of Administration, Community Policing, Special Assignments, Training, Honor Guard, Traffic Services Bureau and our Tactical Response Unit. Deputy Chief Coil is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Class 335, attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Session 264, where he was a Section Leader. He also attended Session 4 of the Homeland Security Leadership Academy in Glynco, Georgia.
