William McVey was appointed to Director of Public Safety by Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo in January of 2022. As Public Safety Director, he serves as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Police Department, while also being responsible for Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management response within the Township.
Director McVey was hired as a police officer in 1998 and has climbed the ranks over his 28-year law enforcement career. He has served in many capacities within the department. These assignments include: Patrol, Field Training, K-9, Sergeant (Patrol and Investigations) Lieutenant, Deputy Director, and Public Information Officer.
Director McVey takes great pride in leading the Bensalem Police Department, which he believes to be one of the finest in Pennsylvania. Accredited through PLEAC and CALEA, the police department is comprised of 107 sworn officers and a professional support staff of 60 civilians. Director McVey is an advocate of the police profession and promotes the great work of BTPD staff. He is a strong proponent of proactive policing and credits his staff’s efforts in keeping Bensalem a safe Township. He will never forget the sacrifice made by Officer Armstrong and Officer Yezzi, Bensalem’s two fallen officers, and makes the safety of his current staff the number one priority of his administration.
Director McVey graduated from Bensalem's St. Charles Borromeo then attended Archbishop Ryan High School. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Millersville University and a Master’s degree from St. Joseph’s University. He is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, the Senior Management Institute for Police through the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) Executive Leaders Program.
In addition to his duties in Bensalem, Director McVey is a past President of the Chiefs of Police Association of Southeastern Pennsylvanian, Vice President of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, Executive Board member of the Bucks County Chiefs Association, past Commissioner for the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, Executive Board Member of the Philadelphia FBI Joint Terrorism Taskforce, President of the Bucks County Hero Scholarship Fund, and an active Big Brother.
Director McVey has been the recipient of many commendations and awards over his career. Most recently he was recognized with the “Guardian of the City Award” presented by the Bensalem Jewish Outreach Center. He is also proud of the fact the Bensalem Police Department was honored in 2023 by the IACP as a premier law enforcement agency and received special recognition by the NAACP in 2024.
Director McVey is a long-time resident of Bensalem. He enjoys spending his time off with his wife, Susan, and their three daughters.
