Supporting Positive Communication Between Drivers With Autism and Law Enforcement
The Bensalem Township Police Department, in partnership with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and the Bucks County Police Chiefs Association, has launched the Blue Envelope Program — an important initiative designed to improve communication between police officers and drivers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during motor vehicle stops.
As part of this voluntary program, participating drivers carry a blue envelope that:
🔹 Identifies them as being on the autism spectrum
🔹 Notes whether they are verbal or nonverbal
🔹 Provides clear, printed instructions on the outside explaining what to do during a traffic stop
🔹 Contains information inside about the program, along with contact details for someone who can offer medical assistance or help communicate with the driver if needed
Blue envelopes are available at:
Bensalem Township Police Department, 2400 Byberry Road, Bensalem, PA 19020
The Blue Envelope Program represents an important step in supporting safe, respectful, and effective interactions between individuals with communication differences and the law enforcement officers who serve our communities.
