Bensalem K-9 Unit Member Competes in United States Police Canine Association National Trials
In early October, one of Bensalem’s K-9 teams competed in the United States Police Canine Association’s Police Dog One (PD-1) National Trials in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Over four days, sixty-seven canine teams from across the county competed in events that tested obedience, scent detection, and criminal apprehension. The K-9 teams all had to qualify at their regional trials to be eligible to compete for the 2024 National Top Dog.
Corporal Robert Schwarting and K-9 Bowie were the sole Bensalem K-9 team participating in the event. Corporal Schwarting and K-9 Bowie did exceptionally well and placed 18th overall. They scored 612.85 out of a possible 640 points. Lt. Mike Schum and Sgt Brian Cowden assisted Corporal Schwarting and K-9 Bowie. Although they finished 18th in the nation, they are still #1 in Bensalem. Corporal Schwarting and K-9 Bowie have had an exceptional career and have been recognized twice as the Region’s Top Dog by the USPCA. In August 2019, they placed first in their respective division on the hit series America’s Top Dog, which aired on A & E.
It’s also worth mentioning that Bowie had to be hospitalized just a few weeks before the national competition after suffering severe medical issues related to heat exhaustion. This was the result of an extended search for two armed felons who fled from Bensalem Police. Bowie’s efforts helped Bensalem Police and PSP capture the suspects and recover a gun. Bowie is one tough dog, and we are very proud of him!

Bensalem’s K-9 Unit members were also present to accept the USPCA Russ Hess Lifetime Achievement Award for the unit’s head trainer, Robert Swann, who retired in 2020. Mr. Swann was instrumental in restructuring the unit's training methodologies and introduced national standards for the unit. Congratulations, Mr. Swann, and thank you for all you did for the Bensalem K-9 Unit and other K-9 units in the region.
