UPDATE: Highway 6 is now open in both directions.

Golden, CO — Eastbound I-70 has reopened following a crash involving a semi-truck near Highway 6 earlier this morning. However, there will be an extended closure on US Highway 6 eastbound, east of Colfax, and Exit 261 from I-70 eastbound will remain closed to allow for hazardous materials cleanup.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., officers from the Golden Police Department, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Colorado State Patrol, responded to a collision involving a semi-truck carrying gravel and another vehicle at eastbound I-70 and US Highway 6. The preliminary investigation indicates the semi-truck collided with a vehicle, left the roadway, and went down an embankment at the bridge over Highway 6. The truck came to rest in the center median of Highway 6, blocking all eastbound lanes. The driver of the passenger vehicle was not injured. The driver of the semi-truck sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A significant diesel fuel and gravel spill occurred as a result of the crash. Cleanup crews remain on scene addressing the hazardous material.

Traffic Impacts:

• Eastbound I-70 is now open; however, Exit 261 remains closed for cleanup operations.
• Eastbound US Highway 6 remains closed at Colfax Avenue.
• Left lane of westbound Highway 6 is closed
• Drivers on eastbound Highway 6 are encouraged to use Colfax Avenue or detour westbound to Highway 58.
   

Crews will continue working to safely reopen the affected roadways as soon as possible.
