Colorado's law enforcement community are writing tickets to unbelted drivers. Safety belt enforcement is about changing behaviors--and saving lives.
Safety belts provide the first line of defense against other drivers, and if you're a driver against your own mistakes as well. Safety belts reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by 50 percent. Why wouldn't we all wear them? Colorado falls short of the national average of safety belt use. 90% of occupants nationwide wear safety belts, while Colorado's use is only 86%. If we could convince everyone in Colorado to wear them, estimates are that 70 lives would be spared in Colorado every year. To provide some perspective, in 2021, 232 unbuckled vehicle occupants died on Colorado roadways. That's a dramatic 12% increase over 2020. And 70 is almost 1/3 of the 232 lives lost last year. So, again, why wouldn't we all wear them!
