Critical Incident Response Team Protocol
Colorado law requires all law enforcement agencies and district attorneys in the state to develop a protocol for participating in a multi-agency team to investigate shootings by a peace officer that result in injury or death, and other applications of force by a peace officer that result in death. Each agency is required to post the protocol.
Keenesburg Police Department is located within the Nineteenth Judicial District. The District has developed protocols for the use of a multi-agency team designated to investigate the use of deadly force by an officer(s) that results in injury or death. This team works at the direction of the District Attorney’s Office and is typically comprised of members from participating Weld County law enforcement agencies, D.A.’s investigators and attorneys, and other specialized investigative agencies including the Coroner’s Office and/or the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Whenever a member of the Keenesburg Police Department is involved in a deadly force encounter where the officer(s) discharges his/her firearm, the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will investigate the incident. CIRT will also be used any time the Chief of Police requests their assistance to investigate any use of force situation resulting in death.
