As warmer weather arrives and more people head to the rivers, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to make safety a priority before launching your raft, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or tube. River conditions can change quickly with cold water, strong currents, debris, and rising flows.
Before heading out:
• Always wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
• Never boat or float under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Check river flows and weather conditions before launching.
• Tell someone your float plan and expected return time.
• Avoid floating alone whenever possible.
• Dress for cold water temperatures, not just the air temperature.
Required and recommended equipment for rafts and boats:
• One U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for every person on board.
• A throwable flotation device for larger rafts/boats when required.
• Sound-producing device such as a whistle.
• Spare paddle or oar.
• Rope or throw bag.
• First aid kit.
• Waterproof communication device.
• Repair kit and pump for inflatable rafts.
• Dry bags with extra clothing and emergency supplies.
Remember that rivers in Northwest Colorado can be unforgiving, even for experienced floaters. A fun day on the water starts with preparation and good judgment.
If you experience an emergency on the river, call 911 immediately.
Stay safe and enjoy the waterways responsibly.
