The Colorado State Legislature passed 30-10-513, Sheriff in charge of Forest or Prairie fire statute. It describes the duties for the Sheriff, Undersheriff and Deputies to control and extinguish prairie land fires in their respective counties.

The Moffat County Sheriff's Office deputies receive training yearly in fire suppression and arson investigation. The sheriff's office responds to approximately 12 wildland fires yearly and also supports the Dinosaur National Park, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Forest Service in their efforts in suppressing wildland fires throughout the region.

This department is responsible for responding to wildland fires occurring outside of the existing fire districts. This department is also responsible for assisting the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the National Wildlife Service in managing wild land fires that are multi-jurisdictional in nature.
