Fire Management Guidelines for Agricultural and Debris Burning

The Bureau of Land Management and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office urge Northwest Colorado residents to adhere to responsible practices concerning agriculture and debris burning. With the arrival of spring and the greening of grasses, it is essential to implement precautions due to the abundance of dead vegetation which can easily ignite and lead to the rapid spread of fire.

Requirements for Responsible Burning:

• Contact Authorities: Before starting a burn, reach out to the Sheriff’s Office through Dispatch at 970-824-6501. Per Colorado Revised Statute 29-22.5-105: Before a Controlled Burn is conducted, notification must be made to the local Dispatch Center. Notice must include reporting party, location, date and time and when completed.

Recommendations For Responsible Burning:

• Weather Awareness: Avoid burning on windy days. Always check the weather forecast for the day you intend to burn.
• Know Fire Restrictions: Stay informed about any active fire restrictions in your area. Call your County Sheriff’s Office or check Colorado Fire Restriction information: www.coemergency.com/p/fire-bans-danger.html
• Notify Neighbors: Inform neighboring residents of your burning plans to prevent unnecessary alarm and calls to report a fire.
• Safety Equipment: Keep a shovel and a sufficient amount of water nearby to control or extinguish the fire as needed.
• Create a Fire Line: Dig a fire line around the area where you want the fire to stop to minimize uncontrolled spread.
• Never Leave Fires Unattended: Always monitor your fire until it is fully extinguished to prevent accidents.
