MESA COUNTY, COLO. - On May 24, 2026, at approximately 5 p.m., patrol deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were notified of an erratic driver on I-70 eastbound near Cameo. Additional calls came into the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center dispatch about a possible juvenile driver, driving erratically between Palisade and Cameo.
At approximately 5:15 p.m., dispatch received a call of a suspected stolen vehicle from the 600 block of Brentwood Drive, Palisade, matching the description of the vehicle driving erratically on I-70. Additional witnesses reported the same vehicle hitting guardrails multiple times and traveling a variety of speeds between Cameo and De Beque.
Before Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies were able to locate the vehicle, deputies with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and marshals with the De Beque Marshal’s office located the vehicle as it crossed the Mesa-Garfield County line, still traveling on I-70.
The vehicle was estimated to be traveling between 60 and 94 miles per hour, as law enforcement witnessed. The driver refused to stop, and by approximately 5:25 p.m., the driver crashed the vehicle at mile marker 62, on I-70, eastbound.
The juvenile driver was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries. Due to Colorado juvenile laws, the identity of the driver will not be released.
We are grateful for the many witnesses who reported an erratic driver and our law enforcement partners who assisted in this investigation - Colorado State Patrol, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, and De Beque Marshal’s Office.
