The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is warning people not to fall victim to purchasing temporary license plates online. 

There are only two ways to obtain valid temporary license plates in Mesa County.  They can be obtained directly from the licensed dealer from which you purchased the new or used car or from the Motor Vehicle Department of the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office.  Do not fall victim to ads that pop up on your social media sites claiming they can extend your temporary license plates. This is not a valid way to obtain temporary plates in Mesa County.

VALID Temporary License plates CANNOT be purchased through any online social media site and printed on your home personal computer.  Real Colorado temporary plates have a genuine hologram with the State of Colorado seal, among several other security features.

Law Enforcement is aware of and actively looking for these fraudulent plates.  You will be pulled over and cited every time you are seen on the roadway if you choose to display fictitious plates.

Temporary plates expire at midnight on the date shown on the temporary tag. There is no grace or extension period offered for temporary tags.  If you have questions, call the Mesa County Motor Vehicle Department at 970-244-1664.
