On August 26, 2025, Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of numerous blasting caps and a large quantity of dynamite on a property on the 2500 block of Kenneth Court in Grand Junction. The family clearing the property of debris found the explosives and estimated the items were over 50 years old.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office consulted with the Grand Junction Police Department Bomb Squad who determined the dynamite was too unstable to be moved for disposal. However, the blasting caps were able to be safely removed to be disposed of at a later date. After consultation, it was decided the explosives would need to be disposed of via detonation on the property. During this planned operation, affected utilities were removed and or shut off to ensure the utmost safety for all surrounding residences and properties.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office contacted nearby property owners who may be affected by the detonation. Residents in the immediate vicinity were recommended to take preventative measures to safeguard life, animals, and property.
At 11:45 a.m., the dynamite was disposed of by the Grand Junction Police Department Bomb Squad via detonation. There are no reported injuries as a result of the detonation and at this time, there is no outstanding threat to the community.
We would like to thank the residents for their careful response when finding the explosives on the property. Safety is always our first priority and we’re glad that the historic blasting caps and dynamite could be disposed of in a controlled manner.
