At approximately 4:40 Tuesday morning, deputies responded to a residence on the 15600 block of Holloway Lane in Glade Park for an altercation between roommates with one adult male reported to have a gun. Witnesses reported at least one shot was fired into the air.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to assist with the situation. All of the remaining people in the home, including children, were safely evacuated. More shots were heard after deputies arrived. No injuries were reported.
Deputies were ultimately able to deescalate the situation, speak with the man causing the disturbance and determine he was no longer a threat to the surrounding area.
At approximately 8:00 a.m., deputies remaining in the vicinity saw smoke and fire coming from the property. The SWAT team immediately returned and contacted the subject. He surrendered peacefully without further incident.
Given the terrain and potential for the fire to spread quickly, an evacuation order was issued for homes within 2 miles of the fire. Approximately 70 contacts were sent an emergency notification to evacuate to the Glade Park Store. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Deputies also went door to door to evacuate residents in the immediate area.
The Grand Junction Fire Department, Glade Park Fire Department, BLM, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, and Mesa County Road and Bridge all immediately responded to the fire. Grand Valley Power also responded. Power to residents and electrical equipment was not impacted.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to about 1 acre on the private property. The residence and at least one car were burned and are considered a complete loss. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. The evacuation order for the surrounding community was lifted at about 9:45 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Residents are asked to watch for fire apparatus on the roadway.
The 35-year-old man involved in the initial incident was taken into custody. Charges are pending further investigation.
