MESA COUNTY, COLO. - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is identifying the two deputies involved in the incident on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in which a male who who became unresponsive while in custody later died.

Deputy Jeremiah Carbajal has served as a deputy with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office since 2022. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division. 

Deputy Christopher Tinkle has served as a deputy with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office since 2018. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division. 

Following standard protocol, Deputy Carbajal and Deputy Tinkle remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation that will take place independently of the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. The incident remains under investigation by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
