The Mesa County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the shooting that occurred in Gateway, Colorado, on the night of April 21, 2023. Investigators are asking for the public’s help in providing any information regarding the incident.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a vehicle and its driver as a potential witness and person of interest. The vehicle, described as a white-colored truck, was seen earlier in the day by witnesses "flipping off" the campers of the "Gateway Get Down.”
The initial information pertaining to the date of April 20th or 420 was provided to Law Enforcement by local residents of the Gateway Area, who described the party to Law Enforcement as a "420 party".
Attendees and patrons of the "Gateway Get Down" are adamant in their statements to Investigators that while the event coincides with April 20th, the gathering is not marijuana-related, and their emphasis is on outdoor adventures.
This is believed to be an isolated incident, and investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the residents or the area.

Shooting investigation in Gateway
Gateway, Colorado - Just before 9:00 pm on April 21st, deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to report a shooting at a campsite near the Gateway Canyons Resort—a person called 911, reporting that his friend had possibly been shot in the abdomen. The 43-year-old male victim was transported to a Grand Junction hospital and is recovering from surgery.
The victim was part of a large party of nearly 100 people camping west of the resort for the week for an annual get-together celebrating the self-proclaimed 4/20 holiday. Several partygoers reported they had heard several gunshots throughout the night but were unsure where they had come from.
This investigation is open and active at this time. Investigators will visit the scene today to gather more information and evidence. Further details will be released as they become available.
