The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the following information on behalf of the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
On Thursday, June 10, 2021, at approximately 6:00 p.m. officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to a report of a wanted subject in the area of Rocket Park, 1827 N 26th Street.
Before arriving, officers received information from the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center the 44-year-old male had an active no bond warrant for his arrest out of the Grand Junction Police Department for Misdemeanor Domestic Violence and a Protection Order Violation.
While contacting the male, a fight occurred and the suspect fled in a Black Mazda. Two officers were injured in that altercation. One was treated on scene by paramedics; the other was transported to the hospital and has since been released.
A short time later, Grand Junction Police Department officers located the suspect parked in the parking lot of Sportsman’s Warehouse (2464 US Hwy 6 And 50). While contacting the subject, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to the hospital via ambulance and is being treated for his injuries. No officers were injured in the shooting.
It’s important to note that this investigation is in the very early stages, and this preliminary information is subject to change. Members of the Critical Incident Response Team will conduct interviews of witnesses and involved persons in this case over the coming days.
Expect continued police presence at the Grand Mesa Shopping Center while investigators continue to process the scene of this incident for additional evidence. The parking lot in front of Sportsman’s Warehouse is temporarily closed.
Additional details will be released as appropriate with sensitivity to the ongoing investigation.
The Grand Junction Police Department will be responsible for releasing the names of the involved officers. As per their agency’s policy, the officers will be placed on administrative leave.

All officer-involved shootings in Mesa County are investigated by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which is comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Corrections, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Because Grand Junction Police Department personnel were involved in this incident, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is leading this investigation on behalf of CIRT.
