The Mesa County Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports of someone calling pretending to be law enforcement and threatening to arrest community members because they have an outstanding warrant.
Just yesterday, a victim was contacted by phone and told she had a warrant. The Scammer claimed to be Detective Bonner or Detective Cortez and that the victim needed to go to her bank and withdraw funds to pay for the warrant, or she would be arrested. She was instructed to stay on the phone with the "Detective" until she arrived at the Sheriff's Office with the money. Luckily, concerned family members alerted law enforcement, and deputies were able to locate the victim before she removed any funds from her account. After speaking to the Scammer on the phone, they have now changed to using his name and badge number, claiming they are Deputy Michael Davidson with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
If you get a similar call, HANG UP! If you have had no recent contact with law enforcement and would have no reason to have a warrant, HANG UP! Do Not give out any personal information over the phone.
The Mesa County Sheriff's Office, other law enforcement agencies, or government agencies will NEVER call you on the phone and request that you go to your bank to withdraw funds from your account. These agencies also will NEVER contact you by phone demanding payment of fines or warrants using gift cards, wire transfers, or any form of electronic currency. If this is asked of you, it's a scam!
If you are unsure if it is a scam, call the Mesa County Sheriff's Office at 970-242-6707 to verify if we are trying to contact you.
