Moffat County Sheriff's Office Assists with Active Shooter Incident in Baggs, Wyoming
CRAIG, COLORADO — On June 8, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Moffat County Sheriff's Office received a request for assistance from the Carbon County Sheriff's Office regarding an active shooter incident in the Town of Baggs, Wyoming.
Initial information provided to responding personnel indicated that a Carbon County Sheriff's Deputy had been involved in a gunfight with a suspect and that communications with the deputy had been lost. Deputies from the Moffat County Sheriff's Office and a Trooper from the Colorado State Patrol immediately responded to assist.
While en route, responding personnel were advised that the Carbon County Deputy had been shot and was receiving emergency medical treatment. The deputy was subsequently airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Additional information from Carbon County indicated that deputies were actively engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect near Milepost 39 on Wyoming Highway 789.
Moffat County deputies arrived in the area and located the suspect vehicle off the roadway on a two-track road. Carbon County deputies were maintaining positions of cover and containment around the vehicle.
The Northwest Regional SWAT Team responded to assist, along with the Sweetwater County, Wyoming SWAT Team. The Northwest Regional SWAT Team is a multi-agency tactical team comprised of members from the Moffat County Sheriff's Office, Routt County Sheriff's Office, Craig Police Department, Steamboat Springs Police Department, and Hayden Police Department.
A robotic platform and unmanned aerial systems (drones) were deployed to safely assess the situation. Through those efforts, law enforcement personnel determined that the male suspect was deceased inside the vehicle.
The investigation remains active and is being led by Wyoming authorities. No additional information regarding the incident will be released by the Moffat County Sheriff's Office.
The Moffat County Sheriff's Office would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, the Grand Junction Police Department, and the Colorado State Patrol for their support of the injured Carbon County Deputy and his family in Grand Junction. We also want to thank our community and our neighbors in Carbon County for their outreach, support, and prayers during this difficult time.
We would also like to recognize the professionalism, cooperation, and rapid response demonstrated by all agencies involved. Incidents such as this highlight the strength of regional partnerships and the commitment of law enforcement officers who willingly respond to assist neighboring jurisdictions during critical incidents.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the injured deputy, his family, and the dedicated men and women of the Carbon County Sheriff's Office as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic event.
