Craig, CO — Following the retirement of Sheriff Hume, the Moffat County Board of County Commissioners has officially appointed Undersheriff Chip McIntyre as the new Sheriff of Moffat County. The appointment was formalized with the passage of Resolution No. 2025-59 on June 24, 2025. Undersheriff McIntyre was sworn in and assumed his new role as Sheriff on July 2, 2025.
Sheriff-Appointee McIntyre brings three decades of experience to the position, having begun his law enforcement career in 1995 as a Detention Deputy with the Moffat County Sheriff's Office. His distinguished career includes service with the Colorado State Patrol and the Grand Junction Police Department. He later returned to Moffat County, where he has since served in a variety of leadership roles, including Patrol Deputy, Investigator, All Crimes Enforcement Team (ACET) Task Force Commander, Operations Lieutenant, and most recently, Undersheriff.
Outgoing Sheriff Hume expressed his full trust and confidence in Sheriff McIntyre carrying out the duties of the Sheriff of Moffat County, stating, "I am resolute, in my confidence in Chip McIntyre, in Nate Businger, in Matt Hammer, in Nic Cordova. I could go on down the line of of every single human that is part of our team. We have worked diligently to serve the citizens of Moffat County. We don't make widgets at the sheriff's office, our deliverable is service. I have no question that that service, and that respect, and quite frankly that give a damn will continue under Chip's leadership."
Sheriff McIntyre expressed his eagerness to build on what Sheriff Hume has built, stating, "I’m truly honored to be appointed as the next Sheriff of Moffat County. I want to thank Sheriff Hume for his decades of service and for his trust in me to carry the torch forward. KC has set a strong foundation of professionalism and dedication, and I’m committed to building on that legacy. My focus will remain on serving our community with integrity, strengthening public safety, and supporting the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office through a smooth and steady transition.”
In conjunction with this appointment, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce several internal promotions, also effective July 2, 2025:
Lieutenant Nate Businger has been promoted to Undersheriff. Lt. Businger began his law enforcement career in 2007 with the Colorado State Patrol, where he served for nine years. He went on to serve four years with the Craig Police Department as a School Resource Officer and Patrol Sergeant. In 2022, he joined the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, where he has served as Patrol Sergeant and Operations Lieutenant.
Sergeant Matt Hammer has been promoted to Operations Lieutenant. Sgt. Hammer joined the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in 2019 and has served as a Detention Deputy, Patrol Deputy, Investigator with the ACET, and most recently as Patrol Sergeant.
