Mesa County Sheriff's Office Launches New AngelSense Program to Aid in Locating Individuals Who Wander

GRAND JUNCTION, CO - The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the launch of the AngelSense Program, a safety initiative dedicated to improving the quick location and recovery of residents at risk of wandering due to conditions such as autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other developmental disabilities or medically induced cognitive conditions.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office AngelSense Program was created in partnership with AngelSense, a leading provider of assistive technology for individuals with special needs and medical conditions that may affect cognitive abilities. The technology includes a proactive monitoring and alerting system, a phone and web enabled application for caregivers, and a wearable device with an auto-pickup speakerphone, and an SOS button.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and recognizes the unique challenges faced by caregivers of individuals who are at risk of wandering. Through the “Persons Who Wander Grant” from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is able to provide 22 wearable AngelSense GPS devices to individuals at risk of wandering. The wearable devices have embedded SIM cards with 4G LTE service that provide updated location information every 10 seconds from any distance.

Should an at-risk individual wander and become lost, the caregiver is able to send a link to law enforcement providing up-to-date location information. This expedites the process of locating and recovering the at-risk individual.

Caregivers and loved ones can submit applications through the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office website to begin the enrollment process. Once an application is received, law enforcement specialists will review the application and contact the caregiver to set up an interview to finalize the enrollment process.

“We are excited to offer this program to our community members in Mesa County,” said Sergeant Ross Young of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. “It has been a team effort to select a service provider that we believe will improve the ability for law enforcement to locate individuals at-risk of wandering in our community should they become lost. While we never hope to need this technology, we look forward to seeing AngelSense in action to help locate these individuals quickly."

“The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to making our community the safest place for all to live, work, and play,” said Sheriff Todd Rowell. “The AngelSense program closes a gap in our community for individuals who are at-risk of becoming lost and may be challenging to find should they wander. It is a great example of finding ways to proactively keep those most at-risk in our community safe.”

“At AngelSense, we are proud to support the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and their commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the community. Their proactive approach to safety aligns perfectly with our mission to provide peace of mind to families through assistive technology. We are honored to be a part of their efforts to enhance emergency response and ensure the well-being of individuals with special needs,” said Rob Torgusen, Regional Vice President of AngelSense.
