Friday afternoon, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies located a wanted person driving an RV in the area of the North Ave and 29 Road. The RV stopped in the parking lot of a business on 29 Road near D ¼ Road. Deputies immediately approached the RV. The driver, identified as 60-year-old Leo Medina, refused to come out. 

Medina had an active warrant for his arrest from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office for the following charges: Robbery F4, False Imprisonment M2, Assault in the Third Degree M1, and Theft $50-$300 M3. 

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and the Grand Junction Police Department were called to assist. 

Medina, the sole occupant of the RV, made threats to deputies he was going to start a fire. Deputies evacuated the nearby business and closed 29 Road from D to D ½ Roads as a precaution. 

Ultimately, deputies trained in crisis intervention and negotiation were able to convince Medina to surrender as the RV caught fire. The Grand Junction Fire Department responded immediately and was able to extinguish it. 

Medina was transported to the hospital and treated for minor burns. No other injuries were reported. 

Median was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on his active warrant. Charges from today’s incident are pending further investigation.
