As part of our ongoing effort to promote road safety, the New Castle Police Department would like to remind all drivers of the importance of keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Pennsylvania Vehicle Code 3316.1 prohibits drivers from operating a motor vehicle on a highway or trafficway while holding or using an interactive mobile device. Known as “Paul Miller’s Law”, this statute was signed into law in June of 2024. Law enforcement agencies can begin citing drivers on June 5th of 2026.
Using a mobile device while driving is a dangerous and potentially deadly combination. When you take your eyes off the road to use a device, you increase your risk of being involved in a crash.
So, what can you do to stay safe on the roads? Here are a few tips:
- Put your phone out of reach while driving to avoid the temptation to check messages or social media.
- Use a hands-free device or voice-to-text feature to make calls or send messages.
- Designate a passenger to handle communication while you're driving.
- Take regular breaks to check messages or respond to calls.
Remember, the safety of yourself and others on the road is worth the wait. Put down your phone and keep your eyes on the road. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
Stay safe and stay informed!
