At the Keenesburg Police Department (KPD), our mission is clear: ensure the safety and security of our community, especially our most vulnerable—our children. Since our operations began in September 2022, our team of experienced officers has worked tirelessly to build trust and deliver results. Recently, KPD made a significant arrest in a case that underscores our commitment to public safety and protecting young people from online predators.
Acting on a tip from an out-of-state agency, KPD arrested a registered sex offender accused of Internet Luring of a Child, a serious offense under Colorado law (CRS). The suspect is a Keenesburg resident who allegedly targeted his young victim online. Through dogged follow-up and independent corroboration of the facts, our detective secured a search warrant for the suspect’s phone. We are now examining the device for additional evidence and to determine if there are other victims. While KPD lacks the resources to participate in specialized programs like the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task forces or to employ dedicated sex crimes or juvenile detectives, our experienced team leverages expertise and determination to achieve outcomes like this.
This case highlights a critical issue: the dangers children face online. Parents, we urge you to stay vigilant about your children’s internet activities. Research from the American Psychological Association (2023) shows that excessive smartphone use and unfettered internet access can harm children’s mental health, increasing risks of anxiety, depression, and exposure to predators. Online spaces can be a gateway for those seeking to exploit young people, as seen in this case.
Some parents have shared with KPD officers that they avoid checking their children’s phones to respect their privacy. We respectfully but firmly remind you: children do not have a right to privacy from their parents when it comes to their safety. Parents have a duty to protect their children from victimization. Monitoring online activity isn’t about mistrust—it’s about safeguarding your child from unseen dangers.
To avoid victimization, we encourage open conversations with your children about safe internet use. Set clear boundaries, use parental controls, and regularly review their devices. These steps can make a profound difference.
KPD is here to serve and protect Keenesburg. This arrest reflects our resolve to confront threats to our community, no matter the challenge. We will continue to work diligently to keep our town safe and to support families in preventing victimization. If you have concerns or need guidance on protecting your children online, our officers are ready to assist. Together, we can build a safer future for Keenesburg.
