14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team Activated for Vehicle Pursuit Investigation
On August 1, 2025, a Moffat County deputy stopped to assist at a traffic accident near 1st and Ranney Street in Craig. While on scene, the driver of one of the involved vehicles backed into the deputy’s patrol vehicle and fled. The deputy attempted to stop the suspect, who continued to flee and was ultimately involved in a single vehicle crash on Moffat County Road 107 near Moffat County Road 139.
The driver sustained serious bodily injury in the crash and was extricated from the vehicle before being transported to Memorial Regional Health for treatment.
In accordance with protocol and to ensure an independent and thorough investigation, the Critical Incident Response Team was activated at the request of the Moffat County Sheriff. CIRT investigations are initiated whenever a critical incident involves law enforcement personnel in the 14th Judicial District. The goal of the CIRT is to provide a thorough and impartial investigation and mitigate against the depletion of resources within any one agency.
CIRT is comprised of representatives from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Steamboat Springs Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, and Craig Police Department. Because the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office was involved in this incident, the Steamboat Springs Police Department is serving as the lead investigative agency on behalf of the Critical Incident Response Team.
This investigation is in its early stages, and the preliminary information provided is subject to change as more details emerge. CIRT investigators will continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses in the coming days and weeks.
Additional updates will be provided as appropriate, with respect to the integrity of the investigation. Upon conclusion, the findings will be submitted to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review and any further action deemed necessary.
