Road Closures

UPDATE 1:15PM Thursday 02/16/2023   U.S.Highway 40 and 318 remain closed from Maybell to the Colorado/Utah state line. CDOT initiated efforts to open the highways yesterday, those efforts continued overnight and are ongoing. All passenger vehicles left abandoned on Highway 318 should be removed this afternoon, allowing owners/operators to continue east on U.S. Highway 40. The Sheriff's Office would like to recognize all of our partners that have worked tirelessly to protect/rescue those stranded on Highway 40 & 318 and continue to labor with focused effort to re-open both highways. As of this update, there is no projected opening time for either highway.

UPDATE 6AM Thursday 2/16/2023   U.S. Highway 40 West of Maybell to the Colorado/Utah state line remains closed, as is Colorado Highway 318 from Maybell to the Colorado/Utah state line. U.S. Highway 40 from Craig to Maybell is open to LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY. Caution is advised on the roadway between Craig and Maybell. Yesterday, working into the late evening, teams worked to reach and retrieve people from vehicles stranded on U.S. Highway 318.  Approximately 19 people and one dog were transported to Maybell via snowcat and temporarily provided services at the Maybell Community Center. All subjects were relayed to Craig, where overnight accommodations were arranged. Efforts to clear and re-open both highways are ongoing. Neither highway is expected to re-open before Thursday afternoon, 02/16/2023.

MOFFAT COUNTY - Due to ground blizzard conditions U.S. Highway 40 west of Craig to the Colorado/Utah state line is closed and Colorado Highway 318 from Maybell to the Colorado/Utah state line is closed until further notice.  Moffat County Search and Rescue are en route from Craig to Highway 318 to rescue multiple standard motorists on the roadway.
