Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies located and arrested Wanye VanMeter, 41, on his active warrants: 2nd Degree Burglary of a Dwelling (a class 3 Felony with no bond), 1st Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (a class 4 felony with a $15,000.00 bond), and a Grand Junction Police Department warrant for Theft.
VanMeter is also facing a new charge of Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender.
Deputies located VanMeter at a hotel on the 700 block of Horizon Drive Friday afternoon. When deputies went to apprehend him, VanMeter ran. A deputy pursued on foot while other units nearby drove into the area. VanMeter abruptly changed directions and ran in front of an unmarked patrol vehicle. The deputy driving was not able to stop in time and struck him. An ambulance was immediately called to the scene. VanMeter was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries. The Grand Junction Police Department’s Traffic Unit is assisting the Sheriff’s Office with the accident investigation.
Deputies recovered a gun from the scene believed to belong to VanMeter.
This remains an ongoing investigation.
