June 16, 2022 Update: The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of Alizon Lopez, a 28-year-old female resident of Grand Junction, Colorado. Ms. Lopez was the female inmate that died on May 21, 2022. The cause of death is Drug (Fentanyl) intoxication, and the manner of death is accident.
The investigation into how Ms. Lopez got the drugs and the circumstances surrounding her death remains active.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility.
At approximately 2:30 Saturday afternoon, a 28-year-old female inmate in the Mesa County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in her cell by staff during routine security checks. Deputies and nursing staff immediately rendered aid and performed CPR. Emergency medical services (EMS) were also dispatched. The person did not survive.
At this time, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Mesa County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
The person’s next of kin has been notified. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death and release the person’s name when appropriate.
