Picking Up Property for Another Person
If you are picking up the property for someone else, you will need a Power of Attorney (POA) or a Notarized Statement from the person who owns the property authorizing you to pick up the item(s) on your behalf. The document must indicate the name of the person picking up the property as well as a description of items they are authorized to claim. The person picking up your property must bring a valid government issued photo ID along with the POA or Notarized Statement.
Item(s) turned into Evidence as ‘found property’ are held for at least 90 days while an attempt is made to identify an owner. Unclaimed Item(s) may be eligible for release to the finder under certain circumstances (Excluding: FIREARMS, items containing bodily fluids, potential biohazards rendering them unsafe to maintain or release, illegal weapons or illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia). Please contact our office just before the end of the 90 days.
If you would like to find out if the lost item has been turned in, call 719-276-5526. You must provide your name, date of birth, phone number, description of the item(s), and the location where the item(s) may have been lost.
Firearms cannot be released to their owner until a background check has been completed through the Colorado Bureau of Investigations. CBI requires possession of a valid Colorado ID or Driver's License. If your background check is approved, you will be notified and then you may schedule an appointment to pick up your firearm(s). The background check typically takes 3-7 business days.
If you are denied possession of a firearm by CBI, you may appeal the denial with CBI.
A background check will be processed for anyone claiming a firearm to ensure they are eligible to possess a firearm. If you are attempting to authorize an immediate family member to claim your firearm, they will need to present verifiable ID, a valid Power of Attorney or Notarized Statement AND successfully pass a background check.
