🚨 Safety Reminder 🚨
Electrically Assisted Bicycles and Electric Vehicles
As temperatures rise and outdoor enthusiasts take to the streets, the Lochbuie Police Department is urging residents and visitors to familiarize themselves with the regulations and distinctions between Electrically Assisted Bicycles and other electric vehicles. A statewide trend in Colorado shows a significant uptick in the use of various electric vehicles and bicycles. Unfortunately, this has led to a marked increase in e-bike-related incidents, prompting a corresponding surge in responses from law enforcement and medical personnel.
In Colorado, Electrically Assisted Bicycles, also known as e-bikes, are defined as vehicles with two or three wheels, fully operable pedals (for pedaling, not foot pegs), and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. They are classified into three categories based on speed and pedal-assist capabilities.
On the other hand, Electric Dirt Bikes are classified as Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's) and are primarily designed for off-road usage. These vehicles often lack the minimum equipment required by Colorado Traffic Code and should not be ridden on public roadways.
The Lochbuie Police Department urges the public to research Colorado laws before purchasing such vehicles, as some require licensed drivers, insurance, and safety equipment for the rider. Additionally, the Town of Lochbuie has a municipal ordinance governing "motorbikes" and similar Off Highway Vehicles, prohibiting their operation within the Town except on premises with specific land use approvals (Lochbuie Municipal Code Sec: 10-12-10).
Riding certain types of vehicles, whether gas or electric, comes with risks. Untrained and/or unlicensed drivers can cause property damage, serious injury, or even worse. It is essential to ride only where you have permission to be, as trespassing on private property can result in criminal action.
Remember to always follow Colorado laws, regulations, municipal ordinances, and ride safely and responsibly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Lochbuie Police Department at (303) 659-1395
