Your Keenesburg Police Department comprises eight sworn officers. Sworn means that each of them swore an oath to serve Keenesburg and to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States and, likewise, Colorado's constitution. So you can imagine that Constitution Day is kind of a big deal to us.
The Preamble really sets up policing, don't you agree? The first three words, "we the people" establish that our government is created to serve its citizens. The reasons for the Constitution are called out to be to:
Those are the exact things KPD does for the community. Our Mission Statement is to ensure public safety, protect quality of life, control crime, maintain public order, and deliver services through respectful interactions with all people we encounter. These are all concepts articulated in the Preamble.
One of our core values is stewardship. In the definition we have adopted to describe stewardship we state that we are guardians of justice. We do not hold ourselves out as warriors but rather guardians, protecting peace and quality of life. Another value is fairness by which we state we will treat all people impartially and objectively.
We are bound by our oaths to safeguard the Bill of Rights and to protect the community and each person in it.
The Constitution, as powerful and meaningful as it is, is only an old piece of paper. A symbol in some respects. But the men and women who stand behind it, who uphold it and ensure its success and relevance more than two centuries after it was ratified, they are real people who walk among you. They swore to protect it while they serve as police officers in your community. For your benefit. For their benefit. And for the benefit of our posterity.
