CULPEPER, VA — On July 17, 2026, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Culpeper Police Department patrol officers responded to the 1100 block of Oakmont Court for a reported fight. Investigation revealed that a dispute over a property line between neighbors escalated into a physical altercation.

According to officers, the confrontation escalated when the two suspects, identified as Louis Chevalier Sr., 70, and Gail Chevalier, 72, introduced a leaf blower and a hammer into the altercation. The victim, a 73-year-old male, was subsequently found unconscious inside his residence, suffering from severe bruising, multiple lacerations, and active bleeding from several wounds.

Through witness interviews and forensic evidence, detectives determined that the victim's finger was bitten during the struggle, and that Louis Chevalier Sr. admitted to gouging the victim's eye with his finger. Detectives also believe that the victim was struck repeatedly with a hammer — leaving patterned marks consistent with both the head and claw of the tool — and that Gail Chevalier struck the victim multiple times in the back of the head with a leaf blower.

The victim received six stitches and was diagnosed with a laceration and depression to the back of his skull, along with numerous additional bruises, lacerations, and a concussion. He remains hospitalized at this time. Medical staff have indicated the victim may have sustained permanent injury; a final determination is pending further evaluation.

Detectives recovered the victim's blood on Louis Chevalier Sr.'s shirt, on the hammer, and at the scene. Evidence further indicates the suspects used paper towels to clean the victim’s blood from their persons, which were later recovered inside their residence.

Both Louis Chevalier Sr. and Gail Chevalier were taken into custody and are being held without bond.
