CULPEPER, VA — The Culpeper Police Department arrested a Culpeper man following a single-vehicle crash on Orange Road that investigators believe was caused by driver impairment.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at approximately 3:23 p.m., Culpeper Police officers responded to the area of Orange Road and Germanna Highway for a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a utility pole. Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle left the roadway near a nearby business, crossed the center line, and struck the pole, causing it to fall onto the canopy at C&C Shell, which then collapsed to the ground. The business sustained an estimated $100,000 worth of damage.
The downed pole caused a power outage in the surrounding area while Dominion Energy crews worked to install a replacement pole and restore service. Orange Road remained closed in the area of the crash from the time of the incident until approximately 1:00 a.m. on August 19, 2026.
The driver, later identified as 71-year-old David Green of Culpeper, was transported to UVA Culpeper Medical Center for treatment. During the course of the investigation, officers developed information indicating Green may have been impaired at the time of the crash. Green was subsequently arrested at the hospital.
Green currently faces charges of Virginia Code 18.2-266 Driving Under the Influence and additional charges are pending further investigation. As with all criminal charges, an arrest is merely an accusation, and Mr. Green is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
No other injuries were reported in connection with this crash. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
We would like to thank Dominion Power, Culpeper Light and Power, and Culpeper Public Works for their assistance throughout this incident.
