As we go about our daily lives, it's easy to take for granted the simple act of crossing the street. However, with the increasing number of vehicles on our roads, it's more important than ever to prioritize crosswalk safety. The Batavia Police Department wants to remind everyone that crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility between pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists.
Pedestrians: When crossing the street, always:
- Use designated crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
- Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk.
- Avoid distractions like using your phone or listening to music while walking.
- Be visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.
Drivers: When approaching a crosswalk, always:
- Slow down and be prepared to stop.
- Yield to pedestrians and cyclists in the crosswalk.
- Avoid distractions like using your phone or eating while driving.
- Be cautious when turning at intersections, as pedestrians may be crossing.
Cyclists: When approaching a crosswalk, always:
- Follow the same rules as vehicles, including stopping at stop signs and red lights.
- Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- Use hand signals to indicate your intentions to turn or change lanes.
- Be visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.
By working together, we can reduce the risk of accidents and ensure everyone's safety on our roads. Remember, crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility, and every small action counts.
Stay safe, Batavia!
