The Culpeper Police Department is divided into three divisions that are responsible for various aspects of law enforcement in Culpeper. Within these divisions are several specialty positions that can officers pursue during their career.

Accident Reconstruction Team

      

The Accident Reconstruction Team (ART) investigates motor vehicle crashes that result in fatalities, sever injuries, or major property damage. All team members attend a two-week basic course as well as several optional specialty courses through the Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition, the team conducts bi-monthly internal training sessions.

Bicycle Patrol

Officers are able to become certified Bicycle Patrol Officers after attending a week-long training course. During the warming months, officers patrol on bicycle in our neighborhoods, historic downtown, parks and nature trails. They are deployed during high-volume and crowded special events like parades and holiday events to allow officers a fast, mobile response to calls for service.

Community Policing

This division specializes in community outreach, education, targeted traffic enforcement, public information, social media, and special events. They also oversee the Neighborhood Watch Program, Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program, Law Enforcement Explorer program, school patrol, and all safety programs.

Criminal Investigations

General Investigations detectives investigate all major crimes against persons and property. These include homicides, robberies, burglaries, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, crimes against children, fraud, identity theft, bank robberies, and any possible gang activities.

K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit provides line support to members of the Department with highly mobile, specially trained police service K-9's. Two of our K-9’s are dual purpose trained for patrol work: tracking and narcotic detection. One of our K-9's is a narcotic detection team. Our handlers and dogs are certified through the American Society of Canine Trainers. The current K-9 teams are K-9 Master Police Officer David Cole with K-9 Juno, K-9 Officer Matt Haymaker with K-9 Reina, and K-9 Officer Michael Barone with K-9 Hawk.

Motorcycles

The Department currently has one police prepped Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The motor officer specializes in traffic enforcement and vehicle crash investigations, and assists with community events and parades.

Street Crimes

The Street Crimes division focus on narcotic investigations, prostitution, wanted persons, and assisting the Blue Ridge Task Force, a regional narcotics task force. They are the lead investigators for overdoses and major drug conspiracy cases that affect Culpeper
