On July 24, 2024 the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (GA) took Elmore “EJ” Taylor Jr into custody. He is being held without bond at the Newton County Jail and will be extradited back to Virginia to stand trial.
On April 16, 2024 at approximately 09:03PM, Culpeper Police Department officers responded to the area of Vantage Place and Highview Court for multiple reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they located a juvenile suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot injury and confirmed that the suspect, identified as Taylor Jr, had already fled the area. Additional law enforcement partners and resources responded to the area to search Taylor Jr but despite extensive and exhaustive efforts, he was not located.
Information was later obtained indicating that Taylor had fled the Culpeper area. The Culpeper Police Department reached out to the U.S. Marshal Service for apprehension assistance.
Taylor Jr faces charges of felony Shooting with Intent to Maim or Kill; felony Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony; felony Discharge of a Firearm in a Public Place; misdemeanor Reckless Handling of a Firearm; misdemeanor Brandishing of a Firearm; and misdemeanor Shooting Across a Public Roadway. Taylor Jr also has additional outstanding unrelated felony charges through the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 16, 2024 at approximately 09:03PM, the Culpeper County E-911 Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the area of Vantage Place and Highview Court. Culpeper Police Department officers immediately responded to the scene. Once on location, officers located a juvenile suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot injury and confirmed that the suspect had already fled the area. Officers provided immediate medical aid until the juvenile could be safely transported by EMS to a local hospital. The juvenile was later released from medical care. Per Virginia law, no additional identifying information about the juvenile will be released.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the suspect was identified as Elmore Taylor Jr, 24, of Culpeper. Taylor Jr and the juvenile are known to each other. The juvenile was socializing with acquaintances on Vantage Place when Taylor Jr was passing through the area. A verbal exchange escalated into a physical altercation. During that confrontation, Taylor Jr produced the firearm and began shooting, injuring the juvenile. Taylor Jr then fled the area on foot and evaded law enforcement’s attempts to apprehend him.
Additional support responded to the area, including the Culpeper PD Drone Team, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and Drone teams, the Virginia State Police K-9 team, and the Fairfax County Police Department Fairfax 1 helicopter. Despite extensive and exhaustive efforts, Taylor Jr was not located.
Culpeper Police Department detectives responded to the scene. As a result of this investigation, the Culpeper Police Department has obtained arrest warrants against Taylor Jr for felony Shooting with Intent to Maim or Kill; felony Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony; felony Discharge of a Firearm in a Public Place; misdemeanor Reckless Handling of a Firearm; misdemeanor Brandishing of a Firearm; and misdemeanor Shooting Across a Public Roadway. Taylor Jr also has additional outstanding felony charges through the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.
Taylor Jr is currently wanted on all of these outstanding charges, and should be considered armed and dangerous. This is an active and on-going investigation.
