People are encouraged to shred , rather than simply throw away, any items that include their personal information. This includes pre-approved credit card offers that come in the mail. Thieves can pick through trash, obtain documents with personal information, and wreck havoc on someone's credit.
On 8/1/19, at around 3am, a New Britain Township resident observed 3 people picking through trash and removing entire trash bags. The subjects had left the area prior to police arrival. It is unknown why they were removing entire trash bags but it is possible they were looking to use information they would find to commit a crime.
If a shredder is not available we recommend people store their unwanted papers. Many municipalities offer free shredding to residents. New Britain Township offers free shredding to township residents twice a year. The dates of these recycling events are listed on the township website and are also included in the township newsletter.
