What is 7-OH? 

7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a potent synthetic compound increasingly found in commercially sold kratom products such as capsules, tablets, gummies, and liquid shots. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued multiple warnings about kratom products containing 7-OH, citing serious health risks including respiratory depression, seizures, liver toxicity, and death. 

Why This Matters to Our Community 

Our region has experienced deaths linked to 7-OH kratom products in both Steamboat Springs and Craig. These tragedies underscore the urgent need for public awareness. 7-OH, is significantly more potent than natural kratom alkaloids, carries a high risk of addiction and dependence, and is often marketed misleadingly as a safe, natural supplement. On Mother's Day, May 10th, 2026, a 29-year-old male was found deceased in Steamboat Springs Colorado. On June 21st, 2026, a deceased male was found in Craig, Colorado. Autopsy and Toxicology reports showed the cause of death in both investigations to be attributed to Kratom toxicity. 

Potency and Addiction Concerns 

7-OH binds to opioid receptors with far greater affinity than traditional kratom. Users can develop tolerance and physical dependence rapidly, making withdrawal difficult and relapse common. Because products are inconsistently labeled, consumers may unknowingly ingest dangerous doses. 

Legislative and Regulatory Actions 

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have commended the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issuance of two Notices of Intent to begin the temporary scheduling process for certain kratom-related substances under the Controlled Substance Act as a Schedule I controlled substance, citing these substances as an imminent hazard to public safety with a high potential for abuse, no accepted medical use, and has not been proven safe or effective for any drug use.
