The BTPD reminds all motorists to stay alert and drive with extra caution this fall. From late October through December, the white-tailed deer mating season reaches its peak. During this time, deer are more active and may cross roadways unexpectedly, especially at dawn and dusk when visibility can be difficult.

Facts to know:

• Pennsylvania consistently ranks among the top states for vehicle/deer collisions.
• Most crashes occur between 5 a.m.–8 a.m. and 5 p.m.–8 p.m.
• Even a minor collision can cause serious damage or injury.

Safety tips for drivers:

• Slow down in wooded and rural areas, especially where deer crossing signs are posted.
• Use high beams when safe to do so, deer eyes will often reflect the light.
• Don’t swerve, it’s safer to brake firmly than to lose control.
• Stay alert: Where there’s one deer, there are usually more nearby.
