Jumpstart your police career with the Culpeper Police Department, an internationally accredited, full service law enforcement agency that serves the historic Town of Culpeper. Comprised of almost 50 sworn officers, our agency offers training, career advancement, specialty unit opportunities, and modern equipment and technology. You will earn a full salary with medical benefits and retirement contributions while attending the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Academy.

Salary* & Benefits

  • Police Officer I starting pay: $61,500 – $68,000

  • Police Officer II starting pay: $68,000 - $78,740
  • Police Officer III starting pay: $75,000- $ 82,734
    • *Starting salary determined within pay grade based upon experience, training, and specialized skills
  • $10,000 signing bonus for qualified lateral transfers
  • 5% Bi-lingual pay (Spanish only)
  • Night differential pay
  • Career and Training Development
  • All uniforms and equipment are provided by the department
  • Take Home car program

Hiring Process

The overall length of the application process takes 3-4 months. Currently, the lateral application process is 30 days.. The entire hiring process consists of the following phases:

  • Job Related Physical Agility Test
  • Oral Review Panel
  • Thorough Background Investigation
  • Polygraph
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Medical Examination
  • Drug Test

Re-application Procedure & Testing Policy

  • Once the Human Resource (HR) department informs applicants in writing of the testing date, failure to contact the Department about their inability to attend their test date and not showing up for the test, constitutes an applicant being declared inactive. Inactive applicants would have to re-submit an application to re-enter the selection process. If the applicant informs the Department of his/her absence in advance, the applicant may be re-scheduled at the next available date.
  • If an applicant is unable to successfully pass the written test on the first attempt, the applicant is declared inactive. Inactive applicants whom do not pass the test on the first attempt may elect to re-take the written test by initiating contact with the Department within one year of taking the first written examination.
  • If an applicant is unable to successfully pass the written test on the second attempt, the applicant is declared inactive and will not be considered for selection for three years, whereas then they are eligible to re-apply with the Department.
