Newtown Police along with other area police departments have been investigating an increase in potential check thefts from United States Postal Service Mailboxes. The stolen mail that contain checks are then fraudulently altered with a crime technique called "check washing."
To limit exposure to this potential check theft issue it is suggested that you drop off mail inside USPS office locations rather than at free standing mailboxes. You should also inquire about any overdue checks that may not have reached their destination. The United States Postal Inspection Service has been advised.
Newtown Police encourages any victims to contact us to make a police report by calling our non-emergency phone numbers: 215-579-1000 or 215-348-8524.
