The first of several license plate readers (LPRS) have been installed in the village. These cameras are an additional tool to help safeguard the village and provide a longer reach to our investigations unit. These cameras and the network it connects us to have already provided valuable information to our detectives in solving crimes that have occurred within our borders. LPRS help law enforcement identify vehicles that are stolen or wanted by law enforcement for their involvement in criminal activities. Officers will receive notification if any such vehicle is within our jurisdiction, this alert would drive our officers to check the area in an effort to locate the vehicle of interest. Additionally, officers would be informed about any vehicle that may be listed as part of an Amber Alert (missing child) or a Silver Alert (missing or endangered adults) particularly those who may suffer from alzheimer's or dementia.
The Summit Police Department is striving to continue its efforts in growing our capabilities through training and innovation. This addition is another step forward in doing just that. Coupling technology with capable and driven officers, the opportunities to provide further protections to our residents and improving the ability to clear criminal investigations are growing exponentially. Additional LPRS will be installed once the permitting process is completed through IDOT. As always we thank you for your continued support.
