Join the 2025 Fall Citizens Academy at the Cortez Police Department

We’re excited to invite you to be part of the 2025 Fall Citizens Academy. This six-week program starts Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and runs every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through November 19th. Classes will take place at the Cortez Police Department, located at 608 North Park Street.

This is your chance to step into the world of law enforcement and learn what it’s really like to be a police officer in Cortez. You’ll get to:

  • Discuss Standardized Field Sobriety Tests
  • Learn about our drone and bike patrol programs
  • Shoot less-lethal weapons like tasers in a safe and supervised setting
  • Explore arrest control techniques
  • Discover how our detectives investigate cases
  • Watch real body camera footage
  • Tour the Montezuma-Cortez 911 Dispatch Center
  • Meet our officers and hear their stories

The Citizens Academy is free and open to all community members age 18 and older. You can sign up with friends, co-workers, family, or your spouse. Physical activities are not required, and you can choose to participate or just observe. Everyone is welcome to join at their own comfort level.

Applicants will receive an email from the Cortez Police Department asking for their birthdate to allow for a quick background check. It’s part of making sure everyone has a safe and fun experience.
