When an officer issues a summons or makes an arrest, it begins the process of the criminal justice system that includes the DA’s Office (prosecutors), public defenders, private attorneys, and alternative defense counsel (defense counsel), as well as probation, mental health liaisons (Bridges), and the courts. Each group plays a distinct role, all working toward the shared goal of keeping our community safe while offering help and support along the way. When someone is charged with a crime, there are often options like diversion programs or probation terms that focus on education, accountability, and positive change. These can include classes, fines, community service, drug and alcohol testing, evaluations, and assistance, and in many cases these steps can lead to the charge being dismissed and sealed.

One thing we really want to remind everyone about is this: if you have a court date, just show up! Missing court almost always turns into a warrant, and at that point we will have to come find you. What could have been a simple diversion, a few classes, or short-term probation suddenly becomes a much bigger problem for you.
 

If you have a case pending, just take care of it and take advantage of the help that is offered. Showing up to court keeps everything moving and gives you the best chance at a quicker, easier resolution. Turning yourself in on a warrant at the Montezuma County Jail is always an option too!
