A 2023 Lamborghini Huracan stolen from a Cherry Hills Village resident by fraud was recovered following a multi-agency investigation that spanned several states. The vehicle, initially reported missing on October 2, had been shipped to an address in Las Vegas, Nevada, but failed to arrive at the intended destination, sparking concern and prompting a formal investigation by the Cherry Hills Village Police Department (CHVPD).
Detectives discovered that the transport company had fallen victim to a business email compromise, a sophisticated scheme allowing suspects to arrange unauthorized transport of vehicles nationwide. CHVPD's Crime Analyst and Detectives leveraged FLOCK License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras to track the truck and trailer responsible for the transport, pinpointing its location in the Las Vegas area on September 30, 2024.
CHVPD collaborated closely with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s VIPER (Vehicle Investigation Project for Enforcement Recovery) Auto Theft Team. On October 7, the VIPER team, working alongside Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), successfully recovered the Lamborghini and apprehended multiple suspects and received information on other individuals involved.
Further investigation led to the discovery of two additional stolen vehicles, multiple fraudulent VIN packages, fake registration documents, key fobs, and VIN-switching tools.
In a related recovery, Alhambra Police Department in California recovered another stolen vehicle connected to the case. The coordinated efforts of CHVPD, VIPER, HSI, and local law enforcement agencies mark a significant victory against interstate auto theft networks, underscoring the critical role of collaboration and technology in modern crime-solving.
"This case underscores the Cherry Hills Village Police Department's commitment to protecting the community from sophisticated criminal schemes," said Chief Jason Lyons. "Through the diligent work of CHVPD's Crime Analyst, Detectives, Officers and collaborative partnerships with national and local agencies, stolen property was returned to its rightful owner, and suspects were brought to justice," said Lyons. Cherry Hills Village remains dedicated to maintaining a safe environment for all residents, using innovative technology and teamwork to combat crime. Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and to stay vigilant, knowing they play a vital role in keeping Cherry Hills Village safe.
